Christien
On Sundays she walks to the church three times, along with her three brothers, two sisters, her father and her mother. At weekdays she looks forward to this day. During the walk to the first service it's still misty outside. The white world and the prospect of the service give her a calm feeling, as though everything is in its right place. Everything she does should be of service to her faith and her relatives.
At school she learns in detail how to behave properly.
Sometimes she cries when thinking of others. Along with her friends she gossips about them (about which she sometimes feels doubtful and guilty).
At night she plays with the idea of being in a big city, where no-one knows her and everything's different. While standing in front of the mirror she looks at her blouse and buttons one button less than usual. She pulls up her skirt to her armpits, so that her stockings are revealed. For a few minutes she imagins herself in a smokey café, an unfamilair parc or grubby hotel. She realises she should't. her mother could knock on the door any moment.
The next morning, her skirt guiltily drops down till her ankles again.
